10 Cool Crawfish Facts

Riverstone - 10 Cool Crawfish Facts

April 09, 2019

We’ll be dispensing 5,000 pounds of free crustaceans at Houston’s Coolest Crawfish Boilat Riverstone on April 13 — not to mention live Zydeco music, face painters, balloon twisters, laser tag, a slide, inflatables and more.

So, before you get to The Club at Riverstone, 18353 University Boulevard, here are some cool crawfish facts to ponder before you get to peeling:

  1. Before they are cooked to bright-red perfection, crawfish can be blue, green, white or yellow.
  2. Crawfish walk forward and swim backward because they have four legs for walking and four for swimming.
  3. Crawfish can live up to 30 years in the wild. We’re pretty sure they don’t live quite as long in crawfish-loving Texas.
  4. Crawfish are a close relative of Maine lobster — which is why they taste so good.
  5. Crawfish can drown without access to fresh air.
  6. Europeans consider crawfish a delicacy. (So, do we.)
  7. Crawfish are not fish. They are crustaceans like shrimp, crab and lobsters.
  8. A quarter pound of crawfish contains 82 calories. Since you get 2.5 pounds of crawfish during our Crawfish Boil that’s only 205 calories per serving — not counting the corn, potato and all-beef sausage included with your meal, of course.
  9. Louisiana supplies 90 percent of the crawfish consumed in the United States.
  10. Crawfish are also called crawdads, crayfish and mudbugs.

No matter what you call them, we’ve got them during Houston’s Coolest Crawfish Boil so join us from noon to 4 p.m. Residents enjoy a resident-only line during the event. Also, don’t forget to bring a camera and take a family photo in front of our giant cattail topiary art installation. See you there!
