Harvest Green-Style Agrihoods Take Root Nationwide

Harvest Green - Harvest Green-Style Agrihoods Take Root Nationwide

May 23, 2016

Harvest Green may be Houston’s first farm-centric community, but the concept of master-planned agrihoods is gaining traction nationwide.

According to a recently published article by AP journalist Michelle Locke, the Urban Land Institute in Washington, D.C., is tracking almost 200 projects that, like Harvest Green, have been developed in response to consumer interest in locally grown, farm- fresh produce.

The article describes one of the latest agrihoods to join the roster, The Cannery. The 100-acre master-planned community on the outskirts of Sacramento California, is similar to Harvest Green in that professional farmers manage the day-to-day operations, while residents will be able to enjoy the fruits of their labor in the form of weekly produce boxes.

According to people interviewed for the article — and Harvest Green homebuyers, the popularity of these communities goes beyond a box of fruits and vegetables, providing them with a strong sense of connectivity to both nature and each other.
