Trinity Falls - Ways to Sooth a Sunburn

June 10, 2014

Sunburns happen. We forget to reapply after jumping in the pool or we accidentally miss a spot on our backs or shoulders. Fortunately, when these incidents happen there are ways to sooth your burnt skin. Here are some remedies that have proven to offer temporary relief while your skin heals.

  1. Oatmeal. You can grind up a cup of oatmeal in a food processor, add it to cool water and soak in it for a while. If you don't feel like submerging yourself in cool water, you can also wrap dry oatmeal in gauze and run cool water through it. Then, get rid of the oatmeal and and soak compresses in the liquid and apply to the burn every few hours.
  2. Fat-Free milk. Using a cloth of gauze, apply cool milk to your skin for 15 to 20 minutes and repeat every 2 hours.
  3. Tomatoes. Simply eat delicious tomatoes throughout the summer! The red gems in tomatoes help protect your skin from the damaging rays of the sun.
  4. Lotion. Your skin is severely lacking in moisture when it is burnt. Don't forget to generously apply lotion often. Whatever you do, DO NOT use soap on your burn. It will dry your skin out even more and cause my irritation and discomfort.
  5. Hydrate. Be sure to drink plenty of water. Getting burnt can be extremely dehydrating, so drink water while you recover.

We all know the best way to prevent sunburn is to apply sunscreen generously and frequently. However, for those times when you are out in the sun just a little too long, these home remedies will help you feel better while your skin recovers.
