Establishing effective homework habits begins in your Trinity Falls home. McKinney ISD schools will soon open their doors for the new school year, which means it's a perfect time to start fresh with developing habits that will ensure a successful academic school year. Here are 3 tips to get you started.

1. Have a set homework time

It is a proven fact that children respond well to routine. This is no different with homework. Allow your children to choose when and where their work will get done, and stick to it. The spot should be quiet and free from distractions. You can even make a "homework box" filled with supplies needed to complete assignments that your child can take wherever he or she decides to homework. One practice to avoid is doing homework right before bedtime. This can cause added stress during a time that should be relaxing.

2. Stick around

While you shouldn't hover over your children as they do their work, it is important to stay in the same room. Experts suggest reading the assignment together and then letting them complete the assignment on their own. Should they have any questions, you will close by to assist in any way you can. This also gives you an idea on how well your child is retaining information.

3. Curb Frustration

Homework can be frustrating at times for your children. Whether they don't feel like completing an assignment or are having trouble understanding the lesson, there will be trying times throughout the year. Get an idea of how long homework assignments should be taking from their teachers. If it's taking longer to complete assignments, allow a short break. If homework is continually a challenge, set up a meeting with the teacher to see how you can help facilitate an easier homework experience for your children.

Sticking to a set schedule and allowing your children to figure out assignments on their own will help establish homework habits that they can take with them throughout their academic journey. We hope these tips help as the new school year unfolds.
