First Olympics in South America

Rio 2016 will be the first Olympic Games ever held in a South American country. The city won the bid back in 2009, beating out Chicago, Madrid and Tokyo.

Rugby Sevens Makes its Debut

This is the first time this variation of Rugby will be played in the Olympics. The seven-a-side version of rugby only lasts 15 minutes per game. Also, both the U.S. men's and women's teams are considered to be medal contenders.

Golf is Returning to the Olympics

Also, for the first time in 112 years, golf is returning to the Olympic Games. While many professional golfers are excited about competing in the Olympics, many golfers are also dropping out due to fear of the Zika virus.

First to Feature Olympians Born in 2000

This is the first Olympics where someone born in the new millennium will be able to compete. The rules officially state that competitors must have been born before January 1, 2003. The youngest competitors will more than likely be competing in diving and gymnastics.

First Ever Team of Refugees

For the very first time, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is sponsoring a team of athletes who were forced to flee their countries. They will compete under the Olympic flag.

Organizers Will Make 60,000 Meals Per Day

It will take 60,000 meals a day to feed all the athletes. Meals will consist mostly of Brazilian staples like rice, beans and barbecued meat.

Team USA Has the Most Athletes

Team USA usually has the largest team of athletes and the same will hold true when competing in Rio. They will bring over 550 athletes to participate in the 306 events.
