Prepare to parade with the pooches as one of McKinney’s most “pup-ular” events — and one of our favorites to sponsor — the Krewe of Barkus Mardi Gras Dog Parade and Costume Contest, returns on Sunday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m.

Patterned after the Mystic Krewe of Barkus in New Orleans, which was established to help abused and abandoned canines, the McKinney event will feature a parade, vendor booths, interactive activities and more. Animal rescue groups will be on hand to help orphaned dogs find fur-ever homes.

Each year, more than 250 dogs and their humans participate in the event, while more than 4,500 spectators applaud. The parade includes costumed pets, their humans and decorated floats. This year’s theme is a ”Bark-A-Palooza Tour Around the World,” with participants encouraged to choose a country and costume accordingly.

More than $2,000 in prizes donated by McKinney merchants will be awarded to costume category winners. Prizes will be awarded in each size category (small, medium, large and huge), for Best Costume, Best Dog & Owner combo/group, Best Float and Best of Show.

Eager hounds must pre-register by Feb. 8. Those who are all paws can register by emailing Blynda Christian at kreweofbarkustx@gmail.com. There is a small registration fee of $5 per dog/float for those who wish to participate in the costume contest. Members of the “pup-erazzi” can cheer them on for free.

Trinity Falls residents live just 10 minutes away from all the events that take place in historic downtown McKinney. In addition, they participate in resident-only events within our beautiful community and have access to world-class amenities. Stop by and see how close we are to some of the most exciting events and destinations in the Dallas area!
