Get Prepped For a Great School Year

Grand Central Park - Get Prepped For a Great School Year

July 16, 2025

The countdown is on, and the first day of school is right around the corner! For students in Grand Central Park, Conroe ISD classes kick off on Aug. 15. If you’re not quite ready yet, no worries, there’s still time to get everything in place. Wondering how to make this school year a smooth one? We’ve got some tips and even a way to help kids in need gear up for success.

Get School Supplies in Order

School supply shopping is one of those back-to-school traditions that can be surprisingly fun.Grab the supply list from your child’s school (it’s usually online) then head to the store. Be sure to bring your kids and let them help pick out their own supplies. From notebooks in their favorite colors to glittery markers, a little personalization can make the process extra exciting.

And while you’re shopping for your kids, toss a few extra supplies in the cart for kids in need. We’re making it easy to donate with our annual Back to School Supply Drive. From July 20-27, you can drop off essential supplies for Conroe ISD kids at The Lake House.

Items like pencils, markers, crayons, paper, notebooks, cardstock, erasers, pocket folders, glue, highlighters and Kleenex are all in high demand. If you drop off your donations anytime between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m., Sunday, July 20, you’ll get treated to a free snow cone. Nothing like cooling off while giving back!

Create a Study Spot

Whether it’s a quiet corner in their bedroom or a section of the game room, having a homework zone can make all the difference in staying on top of assignments. Choose a location that’s free from distractions (separate teens from younger children). To make the space inviting, let your kids personalize it with their favorite colors, decorations or even a small plant. Keep supplies handy, so there’s no need for mid-assignment scavenger hunts.

Build a Daily Schedule

A week before school begins, start implementing a daily routine. Include consistent sleep and wake times, along with structured slots for homework, meals and playtime. Visual charts help younger kids, while planners and alarms aid older ones in staying on track.

Look Back at Last Year’s Highlights

It’s a good idea to review last year’s concepts before the school bell rings. Keep it light and fun, though, or you will have a rebellion on your hands. Turn it into a game. Apps, online quizzes and educational YouTube channels can make reviewing feel less like a chore and more like playtime.

Support Emotional Health

Starting a new school year can stir up a mix of emotions. Take the time to check in with your kids about how they’re feeling. Have conversations about what they’re looking forward to and what might make them a bit nervous. If they’re worried about making friends or keeping up with schoolwork, reassure them that these are normal concerns.

Say Hello to the Teacher

Meeting the teacher before school starts is a fantastic way to make the first day less intimidating. Most schools in Conroe ISD host a meet the teacher event. During the meeting, take the opportunity to ask any questions you or your child might have. This is also a great time to share any information about your child that could help the teacher better understand their needs.

Plan Perfect First Day Looks

For many kids (especially teens) a great first-day outfit can set the tone for the entire school year. If they’re excited about what they’re wearing, it’ll give them a boost of confidence as they walk through those school doors. Let them pick out what they want to wear —within reason. And don’t forget to memorialize them in the traditional first-day-of-school photo.

Ready, Set, Go!

Now that your kids are ready to conquer the schoolyard, you have time to think about your next move. Whether you need a larger home or want to be near great schools, Grand Central Parkshould be on your home shopping list!
