Katy Ranked #2 Boomtown in the U.S. by BusinessWeek

Cross Creek Ranch - Katy Ranked #2 Boomtown in the U.S. by BusinessWeek

February 25, 2009

What once was a quaint rice farming area at the lucky point of a railroad crossing, is now its own city, just over 100 years later. BusinessWeek recently ranked "America's Biggest Boomtowns", and Katy is number two.

Along with the Gadberry Group, a business location company, communities in every state were identified as experiencing the largest growth. Results teetered along our questionable economy, as "the boomtowns of this decade are not booming so much in the last couple years" (William H. Frey, demographer at the Brookings Institiution in Washington, D.C.). The list of the top 10 fastest-growing communities:

  1. Summerlin South, Nevada, 618 percent
  2. Katy, Texas, 168 percent
  3. Wentzville, Montana, 160 percent
  4. Spring Hill, Tennessee, 157 percent
  5. Bluffton, South Carolina, 156 percent
  6. Brighton, Colorado, 153 percent
  7. Wesley Chapel, Florida, 152 percent
  8. Lehi, Utah, 110 percent
  9. Canton, Georgia, 99 percent
  10. Oswego, Illinois, 98 percent

Katy is set to be a medical hub, with Texas Children's Hospital already under construction to add to other new Hospitals such as Memorial Hermann Katy. Just two years ago, Katy approved bonds that are steadily pumping into educational facility expansion. There are plans for more retail developments under negotiation throughout the three counties including Fort Bend.
