Edgewater - Edgewater to Host Dragon Boat Challenge April 9th in the Marina

January 25, 2011

WEBSTER, TEXAS - Johnson Development Corporation's new water community in Webster – Edgewater – is hosting the Edgewater Dragon Boat Challenge on Saturday, April 9th in the community's newly completed phase one of the marina.  The Master-Planned Community is bringing the Texas Dragon Boat Association and their fleet of dragon boats to showcase the water-oriented community during the event celebrating Asian culture.

"The Dragon Boat Challenge is the first event scheduled for the new marina," said Bob Douglas, Edgewater's General Manager.   "This event will provide entertainment for the whole family as you enjoy the dragon boat races, tour new model homes and discover all of the amenities that Edgewater plans to offer.  It will certainly be both a meaningful and memorable event for the community."

In addition to dragon boat racing, the event will offer shopping, Asian cuisine, cultural performances and professional kite flying.  There is no admission fee to the event, and it is open to the public.  "While participating in dragon boat racing, participants are able to spend time with their family and friends, experience our city's Asian culture and still be a participant in a race," said Eve Marie Ruhlman, Executive Director of the Texas Dragon Boat Association.  "No other event offers all of these amenities wrapped into one event."

Dragon boat racing is the world's fastest growing water sport, and it combines tradition with modern day teamwork, enthusiasm, and strategy. The Texas Dragon Boat Association, organized in 2000, provides traditional boats measuring 40 feet in length, 4 feet in width, and carrying 20 paddlers, 1 drummer, and 1 steersperson. On average, the boats weigh about 1,000 pounds.

"Edgewater is the perfect place for dragon boat racing because of its location and ambience," said Ruhlman.  "Edgewater has rolled out the red carpet for us, and we are excited to be a part of what will become one of the largest Asian festivals in the Webster/Clear Lake area."
Edgewater features luxury homes by Newmark Homes Houston and Coventry Homes from the $250's to the high $300's.  Coming soon with homes from the $200's is DR Horton Homes and from the $225's, marina view townhomes by Village Builders.

The first phase of Edgewater's marina basin was completed this past fall.  Phase 2, including bulk heading and a promenade, is scheduled for 2011.   With the marina as the focal point of the water-oriented community, home owners, who are also boat owners, will have access to a prime location with easy access to dock their boats. The Edgewater marina, designed to accommodate up to 50 boat slips and powerboats as large as 50 feet, will also feature a restaurant accessible by water, a ship store and a splash center making Edgewater the perfect community for boating and water enthusiasts to both live and dock their boats.

In addition to hosting special events such as the Dragon Boat Challenge, the marina offers convenient access to Clear Lake, Galveston Bay, and the Gulf of Mexico, and serves as a gateway to daylong or extended cruises.  Edgewater is conveniently located off of Interstate 45 South and the NASA Parkway Bypass.  The Bypass provides residents and boat owners with direct, uninterrupted access to and from the community.
