Fun Facts About Crawfish You Might Not Know

Harvest Green - Fun Facts About Crawfish You Might Not Know

April 08, 2019

Louisiana supplies 90 percent of the crawfish consumed in the United States. That fact alone inspired us to celebrate all things Pelican State with crawfish, music, art and more during Cajun & Crawfish with CAM, 2-6 p.m. Sunday April 28.

Join us — rain or shine — at The Farmhouse, 3400 Harvest Corner Drive, for Zydeco music, crawfish, live painting and more. But before you do, here are more crawfish facts to ponder before you get to peeling:

1. Before they are cooked to bright-red perfection, crawfish can be blue, green, white or yellow.
2. Crawfish walk forward and swim backward because they have four legs for walking and four for swimming.
3. Crawfish can live up to 30 years in the wild. We’re pretty sure they don’t live quite as long in crawfish-loving Texas.
4. Crawfish are a close relative of Maine lobster — which is why they taste so good with butter.
5. Crawfish can drown without access to fresh air.
6. Europeans consider crawfish a delicacy. (So, do we.)
7. Crawfish are not fish. They are crustaceans like shrimp, crab and lobsters.
8. A quarter pound of crawfish contains 82 calories. They are also a great source of protein.
9. Crawfish can shed (molt) their shells up to 15 times and they double in size with each molt.
10. Crawfish are also called crawdads, crayfish and mudbugs.

No matter what you call them, we’ve got them! Don’t forget to bring a camera and take a family photo in front of our colorful cow art installation. See you there!
