More Than Shops at Sugar Land Town Square

Imperial - More Than Shops at Sugar Land Town Square

August 06, 2021

Sugar Land Town Square is known for its eclectic mix of retail but there’s more to this shady outdoor shopping center. The centerpiece of the town square is The Plaza, a community space where friends and family can gather for music, movies, fitness and festivals. Most events take place on the weekends, and they are absolutely free. Take a look at all the things you can do.

Free Fitness Classes

Ready to sweat? Sugar Land Town Square hosts fitness class every Friday morning. Classes for adults include boot camp and Zumba. For parents, Mommy and Me classes keep you and your toddler in great shape. Charity walks and races also start at The Plaza. On Sept. 18, you can show your support for people with autism by participating in the Autism Speaks 8K/5K/1K.

Movie

First Colony Church of Christ hosts “Movies Under the Moon” once a month on Saturdays. Families are invited to bring their lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic dinner. The next showing is The Secret Life of Pets 2on Aug. 14. On Sept. 11, your family can catch Doolittle. Movies start at dusk, so check times on the Sugar Land Square event page.

Cover Bands

Put on your dancing shoes and come out for Town Square Tribute, a celebration of local tribute bands. On Aug. 27, rock out to the Van Halen Tribute Band. On Aug. 28, you can two-step in time with Tribute to George Strait. Nightbird captures the essence of Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac on Sept. 25.

More Music

Bands aren’t the only music taking the stage at The Plaza. Orchestras and a cappella groups fill the night air with song. The Leslie Lugo Band helps you get your Merengue on with a concert on Aug. 20. The Raquel Cepeda Brazilian Ensemble will transport you to Brazil on Aug. 21. A cappella chorus the Houston Tidelanders will return to the stage on Sept. 4. Cornerstone Community Bible Church will play “Music on the Plaza” on Sept. 24.

Dance

Learn to dance in The Plaza. On Aug. 13, you can join in and learn a few moves during “Dancing Under the Stars” with a Fred Astaire Dance Studio instructor. The Rhythm India Dance Co. will put on a Bollywood dance demo on Sept. 18.

Festivals and Fun

Creativity is The Plaza’s middle name, so come out for festivals and fun. Bid summer adieu Aug. 7 while getting wet at the “Back to School Splash.” The event benefits the Rainbow Room and features water slides, DJ, a hula hoop contest, toddler town for ages 5 and under and other fun summer activities. Kids can “Meet the Music” on Aug. 12 with the Vivaldi Music Academy. See some of the hottest cars around at the Car Culture Invitational Sept. 11. The Plaza will also be the site of the City of Sugar Land’s annual Fall Fest. Come out for music, dance, a virtual magic show, pumpkin carving, speed painting, food and fashion.

How Close Can You Get?
