Future Pros Take a Swing at Woodforest Golf Club
January 30, 2020
Think your child has what it takes to be the next Phil Mickelson or Lexi Thompson? Want to find a fun way for your child to get some exercise? The Woodforest Golf Club has a program for that.
In 2019, more than 200 young golfers participated in the Woodforest Junior Academy, making it the largest group of junior golfers in the Houston area.
What sets the Academy apart is that it is not just a summer camp. The program extends throughout the year with a spring, summer and fall series.
Directed by PGA Professional Jon Baacke, children learn all facets of the game in an atmosphere where the No. 1 rule is to have fun. Baacke has more than 15 years of experience teaching and developing the game for young golfers. He’s dedicated to developing their talents and fostering a love of the game.
His able assistants Kaity Cummings and Andy Gaines work tirelessly to help junior golfers feel comfortable as they develop their skills.
Cummings is a 2019 magna cum laude graduate in Kinesiology from Houston Baptist University. During her tenure, she was a four-year letter winner in golf, two-time Jann Edds female athlete of the year, three-time All-Southland Conference selection, four-time Academic All American, and has won four individual Division 1 golf tournaments. She hosts our Saturday Girls Junior Clinics. This is a fun great way for young lady golfers to be introduced to the game.
Gaines runs our Junior Interclub. He was introduced to the game in his early 20’s while stationed in Italy (U.S. Navy). He has a degree in Golf Complex Operations and Management, which he applies to help improve the game for all skill levels.
The Junior Academy offers classes and camps for young golfers ages 5 to 9 and 10 to 14. Among the many camps available are a Junior Tour, a weekend series and an elite series. Check out the schedule here.
The Woodforest Gold Club is located at 1199 Fish Creek Thoroughfare in Woodforest. Considered one of the top 10 golf clubs in the Houston area by Sports Day, the Club sports plus a training center, 17,000-square-foot clubhouse, expanded pro shop and the full-service Woodforest Grille.
