Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Begins Renovations

Grand Central Park - Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion Begins Renovations

November 15, 2016

Grand Central Park residents have much to look forward to, including a bigger and better concert venue as renovations begin on The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, located nearby.

The Pavilion’s board approved plans for the project in May and construction began in October. Over the next nine months, improvements will include a new VIP Club and operations building, new canopies at the concessions and entrance gates, as well as a refresh to the dressing rooms.

The renovations will update and modernize the outdoor amphitheater — already considered the best in the world by Pollstar, the concert industry’s leading trade publication.

The new VIP Club will boast two floors of expanded seating, a catering kitchen and an expansive outdoor patio overlooking the North Plaza. More office and storage space for staff will be provided with the addition of a new operations building.

Named for Cynthia Woods Mitchell, the wife of The Woodlands’ founder George P. Mitchell, the facility opened in 1990, welcoming some of the country’s hottest musical acts, as well as becoming a home away from home for Houston’s classical performing arts organizations.

Cold Play, Van Halen, Bob Dylan and The Police have all played the Pavilion, as has the Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera and Texas Festival Orchestra.

Due to the planned construction, this year's much anticipated Holly Jolly Jingle holiday performance will be cancelled. Most of the projects will be completed in time for the start of the 2017 concert season.
