Run Your Best 5K Ever!

October 31, 2018

Getting ready for the Texana Trot at Jordan Ranch happening Nov. 17? Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned runner, we have gathered some tips so you can make the most of the day and run your best 5K ever.

You can’t run a 5K if you don’t sign up for one. You can sign up for the Texana Trot here.

Set a Goal

We all have goals, and race day should be no different. If you are a beginner, your goal can be as simple as finishing the race. More experienced runners generally want to better their time. Whatever goal you set, it’s important to take stock of your current fitness level. It will help you create a training plan and reduce your chance of injury.

Choose Your Shoes

The correct running shoes will enhance performance and prevent injury. Get help from experienced fitters at places like Fleet Feet. As a general rule your shoes should fit comfortably snug with about a thumb’s width of room between your longest toe and the top of the shoe.

Train, Train, Train

When you were a kid, it was probably pretty easy to just pick up and run. Guess what? It’s a little bit harder now. That means you need to train. In addition to your endurance and speed runs, make sure to include strength training at least twice a week. If you are a beginner, try this training plan suggested by Active.com. Want to run a faster race? Here are six speed workouts. Spice up your training regime with help from apps such as MapMyRun, Run Keeper and MyFitnessPal.

Eat A Light Breakfast

As tempting as it might be to down six raw eggs Rocky style, your best bet is probably a light meal. Livestrong has some great tips for fueling your body before the starting gun goes off.

Warm Up/Cool Down

Warm ups and cool downs help prevent injuries. Dynamic stretching and a 3-5 minute walk are great before the race. Slow your heart rate down by walking for at least 5 minutes after the run. Stretch, use a foam roller and hydrate to prevent cramps.

Have Fun!

A 5K is a great way to meet new people, get some exercise and enjoy a sense of community. When you finish, celebrate! Hint. We’ll be having an after party to help you do just that!
